The Rose Theatre

Friends Only

17 June 2013

Originally built in 1587, the Rose Theatre was the first purpose-built playhouse to ever stage a production of Shakespeare’s plays. Its success soon encouraged other theatres, and these rivals swiftly overtook the Rose, which was abandoned by 1606. In 1989, archaeologists uncovered parts of the theatre and a subsequent campaign saved the site, with a new performance space opening in 2007. We visit the theatre and explore the surrounding area.
