St John’s Gate

10 November 2008
Friends Only

Built in 1504, St John’s Gate was the entrance to the English headquarters of the crusading Knights Hospitallers. The Order of St John was a major power in medieval England and, by the fourteenth century, was one of the greatest religious landowners in the country. In 1511, Henry VIII ended the Hospitallers’ wealth and power when he dissolved all Roman Catholic Orders and took their estates for the crown. On our exclusive guided tour we explore the Council Chamber, Old Chancery, Chapter Hall, Priory church, Norman crypt and museum.

11am–12.30pm or 2.30–4pm, specify preferred time; £16; meet at entrance St John’s Lane, London EC1
