Royal Holloway, University of London, Surrey

4 March 2010

Founded by Victorian entrepreneur Thomas Holloway in 1879 as a college for young women, the Royal Holloway we see today was largely inspired by the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley. We tour the Founder’s Building and chapel and learn about the exuberant roofline. We also hear about Royal Holloway’s stunning art collection and see items not usually on display including works by Sir William Orpen, Sir James J. Shannon and a rare painting by the actress Sarah Bernhardt.
