Chagall Window at Tudley Church (detail). Photo: Laurie Wedd One of England’s largest private houses, Knole is a splendid example of medieval architecture with Jacobean embellishments. Originally built in 1456, Knole was granted to Thomas Sackville, the 1st Earl of Dorset in 1566 and the house has remained in the family. During our tour we learn about Knole’s treasures, including portraits by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, and Reynolds, outstanding tapestries and textiles, and royal Stuart furniture. By special arrangement, Lord Sackville kindly opens his private gardens for us. In the afternoon we visit All Saints’ Church, Tudeley, the only church in the world to have all of its windows decorated by the artist Marc Chagall.
