The Victorians believed cemeteries were not just for burying the dead, but should be places for contemplation as well as commemoration. Opened in 1839, Highgate Cemetery has the finest collection of Victorian funerary architecture in the country. In our tour of the closed west section we explore the Lebanon Circle Vaults, Egyptian Avenue and the Terrace Catacombs. In the eastern section we visit the graves of Karl Marx, George Eliot and Sir Ralph Richardson among others.
