Highclere Castle, Berks
12 November 2009
Friends Only
Home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, Highclere Castle opens especially for this private tour. Originally the medieval palace of the bishops of Winchester, the building we see today was remodelled in 1838 by Sir Charles Barry and is one of the most important architectural masterpieces in Victorian England. Our tour includes the State Rooms, where we learn about its paintings, tapestries and furniture, some of which dates back to the seventeenth century. There is also an opportunity to see a collection of Egyptian archaeological treasures from Howard Carter’s expedition to the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1923.
10.45am–7pm; £69 (including coach, lunch with wine and tea)
