Built in 1901, the Hackney Empire, with its electric lights and central heating, was a technological wonder of its time. Designed by architect Frank Matcham, the theatre attracted performers such as Marie Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin. Following an extensive restoration, it re-opened in 2004 and our tour provides an intriguing glimpse into the social and architectural history of this iconic building and Grade II listed theatre.
