Canterbury Cathedral, Kent

26 November 2009
Friends Only

The cathedral’s history goes back to 597 when St Augustine established his seat in Canterbury. In 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the cathedral and ever since the building has attracted thousands of pilgrims, as well as being the subject of Chaucer’s classic The Canterbury Tales.

On our tour we look closely at the cathedral’s stunning Gothic features and consider why the building holds such a significant place in architectural history. We also visit nearby Eastbridge Hospital, a medieval pilgrim’s hospital with thirteenth-century wall paintings.

9.30am–6.45pm; £68 (including coach, set lunch with a glass of wine, tea)
