The idea of the pastoral is rooted in cultural depictions of an idealised, generally natural, landscape. When applied to a more diverse material landscape of an ‘urban pastoral’ far more intricate conceptual questions are raised. Art critics Dr Julian Stallabrass, Courtauld Institute of Art, and TJ Demos, University College London, discuss the urban pastoral and the social, environmental and aesthetic implications of this landscape. In collaboration with UCL Urban Laboratory.
