This symposium considers Degas’ progressive engagement with the figure in movement, set against parallel advances in photography and early film. Fin-de-siècle France, nineteenth-century Parisian dance photography, and Etienne-Jules Marey are just some of the topics to be discussed.

Morning session:

Ursula Hageli: 'Pushed to the Limit: How developing ballet technique dictates changes in costume'

Sandra Noll Hammond: 'Degas and Ballet Technique: Capturing a Movement Tradition'

Professor Richard Thomson: 'Frieze Framed: Repetition, Decoration and Classicism in fin-de-siècle France'

Afternoon session:

Malcolm Daniel: '"The Atmosphere of Lamps or Moonlight:” The Photographs of Edgar Degas'

Marta Braun: 'Marey, Muybridge, Movement'

Mathias Auclair: 'Ballerinas of the Opéra de Paris and Photography in Degas' Time'
