David Hockney RA: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life
Join sociologist and cultural critic Bernie Hogan for a discussion of the portrait's relevance in the age of selfies and what can be learned about self-representation from an artistic perspective.
Do portraits still matter in the age of selfies? Social media has ushered in an era of extensive platforms that allow for an increased emphasis on self-representation. But are centuries of artistic practice in portraiture being ignored in favour of technological innovation? Are selfie practices in opposition or merely indifferent to more formal artistic work? How can we more effectively consider self-representation in light of our understanding of portraiture?
David Hockney's work has both typified portraiture and subverted it. In conjunction with David Hockney RA: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life, sociologist, social media expert and cultural critic Bernie Hogan will guide a roundtable discussion on these issues.
