This Valentine’s Day, couples can draw closer in an afternoon life drawing class. Set in the historic Life Room of the RA Schools, you can discover creative drawing techniques and develop observation skills and instinctive invention using charcoal and pastel.
Looking for our 2016 Valentine's programme?
Guided by artist Paul Brandford, couples can deepen their love of drawing (and possibly each other) and celebrate at the end of the workshop with a glass of fizz and sweet treats. This class is suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners.
At the beginning of the session couples will take part in a range of fast-paced but enjoyable drawing exercises, which will encourage intensive observation in conjunction with an inventive use of materials. Instinctively responding to a succession of brief poses – each with their own specific instructions and goals – participants will build confidence in their decision-making abilities and dexterity, before going on to longer poses with a greater sense of adventure and involvement.
Using charcoal and pastels, each couple will build a set of works that are bold in colour and approach. During the second part of the session, observational skills and exploring imaginative responses to the composition will be combined to create drawings with a greater sense of poetry, narrative and drama. Partners will also collaborate on a final drawing project.
Tutor Paul Brandford is a practising artist who has exhibited nationally since 1990. He won the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2003 and was shortlisted for the inaugural Threadneedle Prize. He has taught drawing and painting at a number of institutions and is a part of the RA's Learning Department’s team of artist educators. You might have found his painting 'Mission Accomplished’ in last year's Summer Exhibition.
Drawing materials and refreshments will be provided.
Price is for two people and cannot be booked individually.
