Waterhouse
27 June - 13 September 2009
Sackler Wing of Galleries
A retrospective of the great pre-Raphaelite 19th Century artist, Waterhouse, an RA and contemporary of Burn Jones, achieved great acclaim in his lifetime but perhaps has come to embody the Pre-Raphaelite movement, more than any other. His most famous work, ‘The Lady of Shallot’ has become an iconic British image and is re-produced in many media the world over. This exhibition, which features over 60 works from public and private collectors, is the first for over 30 years.
Wild Thing: Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska
24 October 2009 – 24 January 2010
Sackler Wing of Galleries
Wild Thing tells the fascinating story of three artists: Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, who together, in a sustained burst of bold inventiveness before the First World War, brought about the birth of modern British sculpture. The title is inspired by Ezra Pound recalling his first encounter with Henri Gaudier-Brzeska in 1913, likened him to ''a well-made young wolf or some soft-moving, bright-eyed wild thing''. The idea of wildness lay at the centre their work, as they looked far beyond classical art to gain inspiration from what Gaudier called 'the barbaric peoples of the earth', returning to the prehistoric origins of sculptural expression. The exhibition will bring together spectacular works, shown for the first time in the UK, including Epstein's robotic masterpiece 'Rock Drill', Gaudier's monumental sculpture 'Head of Ezra Pound', and Gill's controversial carving 'Ecstasy'.
Sargent and the Sea
10 July – 12 September 2010
Sackler Wing of Galleries
This groundbreaking exhibition will be the first to examine in depth John Sargent’s treasured oeuvre of marine paintings. The show, of 60 works from major public and private collections mainly in the USA and Europe, will include the famous 'Oyster Gathers of Cancale' and will trace Sargent’s familial ties to a New England shipping and trading family. Sargent and the Sea has a transatlantic connection; many of the oil paintings were completed during the artist’s journeys from Boston to Europe.
David Hockney RA
Mid January – Mid April 2012 (final dates to be confirmed)
Main Galleries
David Hockney studied at Bradford School of Art from 1953 to 1957 and the Royal College of Art from 1959 until 1962. He was awarded the Royal College of Art gold medal in 1962 in recognition of his mastery as a draughtsman and his innovative paintings. His early work was stylistically diverse, combining graffiti-like images with quotations from the poetry of Walt Whitman. Hockney moved to Los Angeles in 1963. He produced highly evocative, sometimes homoerotic, iconic images of urban life. By the late 1960s his work had become more naturalistic but it was always characterised by Hockney's alertness to the psychological and emotional resonance of his subject matter. Hockney's work also includes landscapes, photography, printmaking and stage designs for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and the Los Angeles Music Centre Opera.
