Philip Sutton is a member of the glittering generation, which includes Craigie Aitchison and Euan Uglow, that emerged from the Slade School of Art after the Second World War. In this beautifully produced book, Simon Tait and John Russell Taylor trace Sutton's meteoric rise from humble beginnings to success as an artist, revealing the importance of Sutton's family and domestic surroundings to the shaping of his artistic vision. Numerous illustrations span all aspects of the artist's diverse output, showing the influence of Matisse and Sutton's own exuberant use of colour. Whether painting a portrait or the back garden, a scene from Shakespeare or the Houses of Parliament, designing ceramics or stamps, this book affirms Sutton as one of the most accomplished of post-war British artists and celebrates 50 years of artistic activity.
