Unidentified photographer

RA Collection: Art

Monotone photograph of Annie Swnnerton ARA (1844 - 1933) by an unknown photographer. In 1922, backed by Clausen and Sargent, Annie Swynnerton was the first woman to be elected an Associate of the Academy. By 1931, when this photograph was taken, her eyesight had started to deteriorate and though she continued to exhibit at the Academy, she would often show works she had painted years earlier. It is possible that the work seen behind her in the photograph, was also one from an earlier period.
