Fun for all at the Royal Academy for LFA 2010

On Sunday 20 June 2010, the Royal Academy held a day of specially-organised events as part of the London Festival of Architecture. Talks, tours and family workshops celebrated architecture’s special place at the RA.

A “Midsummer Workshop” for families was created by Yuli Toh and James Lloyd-Mostyn of Toh Shimazaki Architecture. The workshop allowed families to take part in a transformation of the Sackler Galleries by contributing to a group installation through drawing and making.

Other activities for children and families used the RA's unique buildings to look more closely at the architecture around us.

Artist Jeanette Barnes captivated children and adults alike with her outdoors sketching workshops, teaching participants to look hard at the building and take delight in expressing it on paper in a variety of media.

Inside, Francesca Herrick led family tours of Burlington House searching for clues in the architecture and decoration that reveal the building’s rich and illustrious history.

Creative Collaboration
Chaired by Viven Lovell, artist, designer and writer Mark Pimlott, painter Brad Lochore and architect Tony Fretton discussed their collaborative practice. Read more

Crossing Disciplines
Sculptor John Maine RA and architect Sir Richard MacCormac RA selected works from the other’s discipline and talked about why they consider it of interest or relevant to their own work.

The Art of Model-Making
Christian Spencer Davies of AModels discussed the art of model-making.
