Connections and contrasts shape this summer’s season which includes events supporting the exhibition Sir Hugh Casson PRA: Making Friends, the Summer Exhibition, the 2013 Annual Architecture Lecture delivered by Eduardo Souto de Moura, a series on architecture in Mexico Past and Present and an extensive programme in support of Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out.
A man of great wit and charm, with a light and fluent touch in design and drawing, Sir Hugh Casson PRA (1910–1999) was the most popular British architect of his time. This exhibition explores Casson’s multifaceted artistic personality largely through his favourite medium of watercolour. The world’s largest open submission contemporary art show, the Summer Exhibition showcases work by both emerging and established artists in all media including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, film and architecture. In conjunction with the exhibition, Mexico: A Revolution in Art, 1910–1940, a series of events explores Mexican architectural culture, past and present. A Forum considering the influence of Mexico's Mayan heritage is followed by a discussion on the relationship between Mexican art and architecture during the twentieth century and talks by two of Mexico’s leading architects, in association with ‘London MexFest’. This exhibition celebrates Richard Rogers RA’ beautifully made buildings and his pioneering spirit that continues to influence social policy and all areas of design. Drawing from Rogers' attention to the ethic, aesthetic and political dimensions of architecture, a varied events programme provides a forum for debate and reflection on the vital issues affecting architecture and cities today.
