Architecture Resources

A selection of archived material from Architecture Programme's activities over the last few years is available online as a free architecture resource. The material includes reports on events, exhibition information and handouts, interactive maps, walking tour guides, film interviews and podcasts and films of events.

Future Memory

This series of RA Forum events, held in 2011, addressed the character, uses and implications of memory for visual culture today. In partnership with the British Council and the Preservation of Monuments Board, Singapore, a temporary pavilion was commissioned from PERNILLA & ASIF, as part of Singapore's annual architecture festival in October 2011. This education guide provides an introduction to the remarkable architecture of Burlington House, the home of the Royal Academy, charting its complex and fascinating evolution from its beginnings to the present day. The guide is on sale in the RA Shop for £5.95 (and free for teachers and students).

Architecture and Beauty: A Troubled Relationship

An RA Forum held on 26 May 2010, coinciding with the publication of Architecture and Beauty: Conversations about A Troubled Relationship by Yael Reisner with Fleur Watson, saw Gaetano Pesce, Peter Cook RA, Hernan Diaz Alonso and Will Alsop RA explore the relationship between architecture and beauty. Sprol EXHIBITION
Relics of old London: Photography and the spirit of the city

On show between 10 February and 22 June 2010, this exhibition presented a selection of photographs from the 1870s and 1880s commissioned by the Society for the Photographing of Relics of Old London which sought to document buildings that represented old London threatened with destruction. The complete collection, exhibition handout and an interactive Google Map are available online. Read more

Ballardian Architecture: Inner and Outer Space

On 15 May 2010 an RA Forum examined how the imagination and perceptions of the writer JG Ballard challenge and inform conceptions of and approaches to architecture. Audio and video recordings of the various contributions to the Forum are available online. Read more

Paper Cities EXHIBITION
Paper City: Urban Utopias

On show 31 July—27 October 2009, Paper City: Urban Utopias showcased a selection of extraordinary drawings, collages and photomontages produced for Blueprint as part of their back-page ‘Paper City’ commissions. We also ran a competition inviting members of the public to submit their own Paper Cities inspired by the exhibition, a selection of which are available online. Read more

Walking Palladian London

To coincide with Andrea Palladio: His Life and Legacy on show 31 January—13 April 2009, the Architecture Programme produced two self-guided walking tours of Palladian London starting from Burlington House, home of the Royal Academy, and including some of the city's architectural gems. Read more

Centrepoint PODCASTS AND MAPS
The Architects Who Made London

Over the course of four series and a total of twenty lectures, the Royal Academy examined the architects who have shaped the London we see today. Diverse Minds: Photographic Portraits from the Architecture Programme

A selection of photographs by Alexander McIntyre of contributors to the Royal Academy’s Architecture Programme from 2004—08 were exhibited 2008—09 in the exhibition Diverse Minds: Photographic Portraits from the Architecture Programme All McIntyre's photographs are available to view on the RA Collection online catalogue. Over the last few years the Architecture Programme has conducted a series of interviews with architect Royal Academicians and other eminent architects who have delivered lectures at the Royal Academy. These interviews are available online and present a valuable insight on the work of some of the most innovative and influential contemporary practitioners. Read more

Architecture and affluence

An affluent society, wrote the economist JK Galbraith, makes no meaningful distinction between luxury and necessity. Over three events in Autumn 2007 the RA Forum explored the implications of this socio-economic condition for art, architecture, urban space and form. Read more

An RA Forum held on 24 April 2006 asked for speakers to discuss the economic, social and environmental pressures transforming cities around the world in relation to new technologies. Read more
