Conrad Shawcross attended Chelsea School of Art (1996), The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford (1999) and the Slade School of Art, University College London (2001).

He describes himself as ‘a thinker and a maker’ and one of his abiding themes is time. Often working on an epic scale, employing intricate mechanisms and a wide range of materials and media, he creates physical manifestations of philosophical and scientific theories.

First coming to prominence in 2004, when he exhibited The Nervous System at the Saatchi Gallery, his recent installations include Continuum (2004) – a commission for the National Maritime Museum, London; Chord (2009) – a horizontal rope machine in the Holborn Tunnel, London and Metamorphosis (2012) a collaboration at the National Gallery, London.

His first public commission, Space Trumpet, which was exhibited at Unilever House, London in 2007, won the Art and Work Award (2008) and in 2009 he won the Illy Prize for the best solo presentation at Art Brussels.
