Born: 1969, St Albans
Elected RA: 13 March 2013

Joffe took a foundation course at Camberwell College of Art (1987 – 1988) before studying at Glasgow School of art (1988 – 1991) and later the Royal College of Art (1992 – 1994).

She is known for her arresting portraits of women. Working from photographs, she uses broad, fluid brushstrokes to animate her protagonists. Ranging in scale from a few inches square to monumental canvases, her iconic depictions, which are often intimate and imbued with humour, testify to the concerns and mores of women from diverse walks of life.

She was awarded a Delfina Studio Trust Award (1994 – 1996), the Abbey Scholarship, British School at Rome (1998 – 1999) and won the Charles Wollaston Award for ‘the most distinguished work’ in the Summer Exhibition (2006).
