Looking ahead

In the longer term, the Burlington Project – a masterplan for the entire Royal Academy by Sir David Chipperfield RA – will deliver a wide range of new spaces and facilities. We will strengthen the RA’s status as a home for debate in the heart of London with the addition of a 300 seat auditorium in Burlington Gardens. We will improve accommodation for the Royal Academy Schools, where our unrivalled three year postgraduate course nurtures the next generation of talented artists. Most importantly of all, a link will be constructed between Burlington Gardens and Burlington House enabling visitors easy access to a unified Royal Academy site. We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given initial support for a £12.7m bid, including £458,700 development funding, for this exciting project. In order to submit a round two application in 2013 we need to secure further match funding.

The Burlington Project also encompasses improvements to Burlington House. These include significant improvements to the main entrance hall, and the new Keeper’s House development by Long and Kentish architects which, in Autumn 2013, will provide new facilities and spaces for Friends of the Royal Academy and visitors.
